Why you don't need a green screen anymore
The old way to replace a background was chroma key: hang a green screen, light it evenly, and the software keys out the green. It works, but it's gear, space and hassle — and if the lighting is uneven you get jagged edges anyway.
On-device AI segmentation skips all of that. A model looks at each camera frame, figures out which pixels are you and which are the background, and separates them — no matter what's actually behind you. What you need
- A recent Chrome, Edge or other Chromium browser
- A webcam — a laptop camera is fine
- Decent, even front lighting (it makes the cutout edges cleaner)

Step 1 — Open Effects › Background
On the record page, turn your camera on. Open the Effects menu and choose Background. You'll see your live camera with background options next to it, and every change previews instantly so you can see exactly how the cutout looks before you hit record.
Step 2 — Pick Blur, Image or Color
There are three modes, and they cover just about every situation:
- Blur — keeps your real room but softens it into a clean, professional blur. The safest choice for calls and talking-head videos.
- Image — replace the background entirely with one of the built-in gradient presets, or upload your own photo (an office, a brand backdrop, a scene). The upload stays on your device.
- Color — set a solid background color. Pick any custom color, or use classic chroma green or blue if you specifically want a flat key color to composite against later.
Step 3 — Check your edges
Segmentation is good, but a few seconds of setup makes it great. Face a window or a lamp so the light hits you from the front — even lighting gives the model a crisp outline of your head and shoulders. Avoid wearing a color that matches your chosen background image too closely, and tie back anything wispy if you want the hairline razor-sharp. Then check the preview: if the edge looks clean, you're set.
Step 4 — Record — it burns into the file
Hit record. The background you chose shows live and is baked into the recording — there's no separate compositing step afterward. When you stop, the clip lands in the editor with the background already in place, ready to trim, caption, or drop music under.
Step 5 — Guests get their own background too
If you invite remote guests by link, each of them can set their own background — blur, image or color — from their own browser, with the segmentation running on their device. Everyone's cutout is part of the recorded composite, so a whole multi-person interview can have clean, consistent backgrounds without a single green screen in any of their rooms.
